Tomi Siira tackles product development challenges with curiosity and experience

Our Fossil Free series introduces Product Development Manager Tomi Siira, who not only excels in product development but is also constantly learning more about the construction industry.

After graduating with a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Aalto University, Tomi seemed set for a career in large technology companies. At ABB, he had already gained experience in product management and maintenance, and in a big corporation, opportunities are never in short supply.

His career in design had begun promisingly with 3D modelling and design tasks. But Tomi’s naturally curious mindset made him wonder what the world outside the corporate giants might look like. You can’t really know unless you try.

That opportunity came with Hefmec Engineering – and indeed, it was different. Tomi got to work from scratch on entirely new design assignments. As is often the case in smaller companies, his role was broad, touching everything from project planning to consulting. The wide range of responsibilities brought new challenges and plenty of learning by doing, paving the way for the next step.

That step was Valmet. Back to a big company, but once again with new opportunities. This time, Tomi truly discovered the world of product development, and, in his own words, became hooked. The work was closely tied to developing environmentally friendly solutions, which added both content and meaning.

After five years at Valmet, a chance came along to combine two things he valued most: the hands-on, versatile working model of a small company and the impact of product development. At Fiberwood, those two elements clicked perfectly.

A responsible company shaping the whole industry

“What impressed me most about Fiberwood was the chance to develop something entirely new and meaningful – and to influence things right from the start. The company itself made a strong impression, and I also saw a great opportunity for the next step in my own career. The broader responsibilities and scope of work were very appealing,” Tomi says.

Much of his current work has clear connections to his role at Valmet, which provided a solid foundation for this next level.

“The potential of responsible solutions in construction is growing all the time, and Fiberwood gives me the chance to use my expertise from that perspective as well. Overall, it’s a fascinating mix of curiosity and experience: at Valmet I worked on product development aimed at the food industry, and now I’m diving into construction – and learning more every day.”

Based on his first few months at Fiberwood, Tomi says he is extremely satisfied with his decision. He has learned a lot in a short time and, most importantly, has been warmly welcomed into both his role and the team.

“A big thanks goes to my colleagues, who have done a great job bringing me on board and prepping me for the work.”

Variety, prioritisation, and seamless teamwork

As is typical in a small company, Tomi’s workdays vary a lot. Sometimes he supports production, and other times he leads projects, ensuring everything progresses on schedule. The broad and diverse role suits him well.

One skill stands out as essential in his daily work: problem-solving.

“You need problem-solving skills in almost everything, along with the ability to react quickly to changing situations. In a startup, plans need constant updating, and you always need a Plan B in your back pocket.”

Prioritisation is closely tied to problem-solving. It’s about structuring your own thoughts and schedules so that the bigger picture stays under control – and so that everyone always knows what the focus is right now.

“Everyone brings ideas to the table – and that’s only a good thing, as long as we all share the same goal. In a small company, focusing on the right things is what matters most.”

Fiberwood offers Tomi plenty of exciting challenges. As he continues to learn, he can contribute more and more of his own ideas while strengthening his ability to process the specifics of this new industry. But what stands out the most at Fiberwood?

“The people. This team truly embodies a spirit of working together and supporting each other.”
