Fiberwood is participating in the SUSPENSE project, which will start in the fall under Horizon’s CBE JU. The project received €7.49 million in funding to develop safe, sustainable, and high-performance adhesives for construction, packaging, and furniture applications. The four-year project, led by Chimar Hellas SA, Greece, brings together 15 industry leaders and research institutes from Greece, Spain, France, Finland, Germany, Turkey, and Norway to accelerate the transition from fossil-based adhesives to fully bio-based alternatives. This transition supports Fiberwood’s vision of carbon-negative, plastic-free materials.
Building on Fiberwood’s Circular and Sustainable Approach
For Fiberwood, participation in SUSPENSE is a natural extension of its commitment to sustainability. The company’s insulation solutions already minimise environmental impact by using renewable wood fibres without synthetic resins or thermoplastics. By participating in SUSPENSE, Fiberwood can explore new adhesive solutions that further enhance the usage of wood side streams, the circular economy and reduce carbon footprints in the built environment.
“Our goal at Fiberwood is to achieve 100% bio-based products and processes. The next step in development is 100% wood-based products, meaning that both binders and additives in our products and processes are derived from wood. The SUSPENSE project plays a crucial role in this journey, helping us co-develop wood-based adhesive solutions that meet industrial performance standards while supporting our mission to boost fossil-free construction,” says Karita Kinnunen-Raudaskoski, Fiberwood’s CTO.
Unlocking Underutilised Plant-Based Feedstocks
The SUSPENSE project focuses on developing adhesives from renewable feedstocks such as plant-based non-food proteins, bio-acids, and polyphenols and demonstrating their use in wood-based panels and insulation materials. These innovations will enable adhesives with up to 50% lower VOC emissions, improved environmental performance, and safer use for both manufacturers and end users.
Towards the Next Era of Sustainable Materials
By participating in SUSPENSE, Fiberwood strengthens its role as an innovator in sustainable construction materials, working collaboratively to unlock new business opportunities and support the EU’s circular economy goals.
Stay tuned for updates as we continue to create materials that store carbon long-term and reduce environmental impact, without compromising on safety or performance.
